Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I cut the shower pan on site?

Yes. KotyShower pans are designed to be cut-to-fit using a standard utility knife or saw. When cutting, always maintain the slope toward the drain (¼" per foot minimum). Trimming will not compromise waterproofing performance when the 5" overlap is maintained.

2. Is the 5" waterproofing overlap required?

Yes. The 5" overlap is a core feature of the KotyShower system. It ensures a watertight seal at seams, corners, and transitions, exceeding standard industry practices (typically 2"). This built-in safeguard greatly reduces the risk of leaks and callbacks.

3. Do I need additional waterproofing when using KotyShower backerboard?

No additional layers are required. KotyShower backerboard is engineered with integrated waterproofing and works seamlessly with our sheet membrane or approved liquid-applied options. However, if you prefer extra protection in high-moisture environments, our system is fully compatible with secondary membranes.

4. What kind of drain assemblies are compatible?

KotyShower pans and membranes are designed to work with standard center drains, linear drains, and Schluter-style assemblies. Always confirm drain type during planning and ensure proper sealant is used at the flange.

5. How do I fasten the backerboard?

Use corrosion-resistant screws or fasteners approved for cement/foam backerboards. Fasteners should be flush with the surface but not over-driven. Space screws approximately 8" on center along framing members. Avoid driving fasteners into pan areas.

6. Can I use liquid membrane instead of sheet membrane?

Yes, KotyShower systems are compatible with both sheet membranes and liquid-applied membranes. Sheet membranes are recommended for speed and consistency, while liquid membranes work well for irregular layouts. Always maintain the 5" overlap standard regardless of the method.

7. What is the recommended wall height for waterproofing?

Waterproofing should extend to the full height of the shower walls, typically 80 inches or to the ceiling, whichever is greater. For tub-to-shower conversions, waterproofing should extend at least 2" above the showerhead outlet.

8. Can I install tile directly over KotyShower backerboard?

Yes. KotyShower backerboard is designed as a tile-ready surface. Use modified thinset mortar and follow manufacturer recommendations for tile type and size. Ensure all seams are taped and waterproofed before tiling.

9. What if my subfloor isn’t perfectly level?

Minor irregularities can be corrected with a thinset mortar bed beneath the pan. For larger discrepancies, self-leveling underlayment may be required. A level substrate is critical for proper pan slope and long-term performance.

10. Does KotyShower offer a warranty?

Yes. KotyShower offers a limited manufacturer’s warranty on our backerboard and waterproofing products when installed according to our guidelines. Warranty details and claim procedures are available on the Support page.
